The alternative Internet(s) – state of the art and the possible futureThe alternative Internet(s) – state of the art and the possible future

Title: Some issues concerning the relation between Open Networks, Creativity and Urban Mobility.

Abstract:

The construction of open infrastructure has been contributing to the efficiency in the provision of connectivity in disadvantaged areas for over 10 years. Examples of this phenomenon are guifi.net and Freifunk, among other communities. These projects, however, have not yet proved benefits other than the provision of connectivity to those who lack it. We need to pose the following questions:

Can the collaboration between creative communities and citizen movements strengthen the construction of a social Internet supported by Open Networks?

Will the Open Networks be able to generate their own services or will they always depend on services which already exist within the monopolistic networks?

Could the Open Networks provide mobile connectivity within the urban space in an effective way?
